Express Yourself

Creative Writing through Photography. How can you express yourself through a photo? How can you express yourself through a photo in which everyone must be doing the same thing? What makes you, you? This would be a great exercise to connect with a creative writing exercise to examine how students express themselves.

  1. Using a provocative image is a great way to start a creative writing exercise. I'm having a little trouble making the full connection of this image with your writing prompt (and your students might too); can you scaffold it a little more so that it is a clearer connection?

  2. I didn't mean for those questions to be the exact writing prompt that my students would see. Those questions were more the questions I was asking myself.

This picture represents how each person shows themself in a different way using one object, sunglasses. I would use this idea in my classroom perhaps with a different object - a silly hat, or a megaphone, or a bandana, and let each student wear or use it in the picture however they like.

The writing prompt would be this.

Why did you choose to wear (insert clothing here) the way you did? How does this picture show the class who you are?

At the end the students would connect the picture their writing to create a collage of all the students work and images together.

This would be a great way for higher grades, 6th-8th to really get to know their peers in a different way, but also have the students think about themselves in an "out of the box" format.
